In my view, this painting showcases how the earthly treasures are worth nothing compared to the glory of Christ. That is why the knight looks at the cross like that, because he knows that he maybe king here on earth but he also knows there is a king of kings.
The Vision of Saint Thomas Aquinas

This depicts the miraculous event of St. Thomas Aquinas when he was finishing the Summa Theologica and heard "You have written well of me, Thomas. What reward would you have for your labor?" and responded with "Domine, non nisi Te". I personally really like this saint and the Summa Theologica
